Amazon expands cashierless shopping technology to third-party retailers

Amazon is expanding its Dash Carts in various stores while reducing reliance on cashierless checkout. Despite layoffs in related services, Amazon plans to implement its cashierless shopping tech in third-party stores, emphasizing it will continue developing its Just Walk Out technology amid competition for grocery tech dominance.

Amazon is doubling down on its innovative shopping technologies, specifically its Just Walk Out technology, despite stepping back from deploying the system across its own Amazon Fresh grocery stores in the U.S. This strategic move isn't a sign of the tech giant giving up on cashierless checkout systems. Instead, Amazon is planning a significant expansion of its Just Walk Out technology to third-party retailers, aiming to equip over 120 non-Amazon-owned stores by the end of the year—effectively doubling its presence in the market compared to the previous year.

The company's decision to shift from Just Walk Out to smart carts in its U.S. Amazon Fresh stores is part of a broader strategy to revamp its grocery chain. These smart carts, already in use at select locations, employ sensors to detect items placed inside while also displaying deals and total purchase cost to the shopper, facilitating a more interactive and efficient shopping experience. This move caters to a diverse consumer base looking for varying levels of technology engagement in their shopping routines.

Amazon's venture into the grocery sector has been ambitious, encompassing the Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go brands and the acquisition of Whole Foods in 2017 for $13.7 billion. Despite these efforts and innovations, Amazon is still chasing to become a major player in the U.S. grocery market, with CEO Andy Jassy acknowledging the challenge of cracking the right formula for brick-and-mortar grocery success.

The approach to sell Just Walk Out technology to third-party businesses comes as Amazon seeks to dispel misconceptions about the system, particularly its reliance on human reviewers. Jon Jenkins, vice president of Just Walk Out at Amazon, clarified that while humans do assist in labeling video clips to train the machine learning system, the notion of live monitoring by individuals to tally up customer purchases is "completely inaccurate". This system aims to refine the checkout experience by reducing the instances where manual intervention is necessary, thus maintaining customer privacy and trust.

Amazon's expansion into third-party retailers with its cashierless technology is not only a response to the evolving retail landscape but also a part of the competition with services like Instacart, which also offers digital shopping solutions to brick-and-mortar stores. As retailers seek technologies to digitize and streamline operations, consumers are increasingly favoring omnichannel shopping experiences, blending digital convenience with physical shopping.

This ambitious push to license out its Just Walk Out technology while enhancing the capabilities and appeal of its smart carts demonstrates Amazon's commitment to innovating the grocery shopping experience. Despite retracting the technology from its own larger grocery outlets in favor of smart carts, Amazon believes in the potential of Just Walk Out technology for smaller stores and is actively working on the next generation of this technology to better cater to large-format stores. By advancing its technological offerings and addressing market demands, Amazon continues to shape the future of retail, fighting for a stronger foothold in the grocery industry where it competes against giants like Walmart.
