US Investigates Tesla's 2 Million Vehicle Autopilot Recall

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating if Tesla's recall of over 2 million vehicles in December to enhance Autopilot safety measures is sufficient.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into Tesla's recent recall of its Autopilot driver-assistance system, which affects over two million vehicles. This recall, announced in December, spans virtually all Tesla cars produced in the United States since 2012. The NHTSA's probe aims to assess whether Tesla's measures to enhance Autopilot safety are adequate, especially in ensuring driver engagement while the technology is in use.

This investigation stems from persisted concerns about accidents involving the Autopilot and the more technically advanced Full Self-Driving system, post the recall. The NHTSA revealed that at least 29 fatal accidents from January 2018 to August 2023 involved these Tesla technologies. In thirteen instances, the involved Tesla vehicles collided with objects or individuals directly in their trajectory.

The federal agency's scrutiny adds to the growing challenges faced by Tesla, which has seen its sales drop significantly for the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a more than 8 percent decrease in the first quarter year over year.

Tesla had initiated the recall following a prior investigation by the NHTSA, which concluded that Tesla had not implemented sufficient safeguards to ensure the Autopilot was used responsibly. The technology, capable of executing acceleration, braking, and other navigational tasks, requires drivers to stay alert and be ready to assume control at any moment. The NHTSA's analysis of Tesla crash data indicated that failures in detecting obstacles by the vehicle's cameras, sensors, and software, coupled with delayed driver responses, had frequently resulted in severe consequences.

The ongoing investigation signifies a critical examination of Tesla's approach to automated driving technology and its commitment to user safety, reflecting broader regulatory and public scrutiny of autonomous vehicle systems and their implementation on public roads.
