Uber Launches First Water Transport Service in India with Shikara Rides on Dal Lake

Uber has launched its first water transport service in India, offering shikara rides on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir. This initiative aims to blend technology with tradition, enhancing tourism and providing economic opportunities for local shikara operators.

Uber has made a significant move in the transportation sector by launching its first water-based service in India, specifically on the scenic Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir. This marks Uber's first water transport service in Asia, following similar initiatives in European cities like Venice. The service, known as Uber Shikara, allows tourists to pre-book rides on the traditional wooden boats, known as shikaras, through the Uber app. This initiative is part of Uber's strategy to blend modern technology with traditional experiences, aiming to boost tourism in the picturesque region of Kashmir.

The Uber Shikara service was officially launched on December 2, 2024, and is available for a limited period. It allows tourists to book rides 12 hours to 15 days in advance, with each ride accommodating up to four passengers for a one-hour duration. The rides operate from Shikara Ghat No 16 on Dal Lake, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. Notably, Uber has decided not to charge any fees on these rides, allowing the full fare to go directly to the shikara operators, thereby creating additional economic opportunities for grassroots tourism workers in Jammu and Kashmir.

Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, expressed pride in this initiative, stating that it is a humble attempt to combine technology and tradition to provide a seamless experience for travelers. The service is expected to enhance accessibility and uplift tourism in the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir. The launch comes at a time when Srinagar is preparing for the busy winter holiday season, offering travelers a unique way to experience the scenic beauty of Dal Lake.
